Sailing for Beginners – RYA levels 1, 2 & 3
These two-day sailing course, catering for both adults and children 13 and over. We cater for complete beginners, or those who have attended a taster session.
At the end of these courses, you should be able to sail safely and independently in light conditions, and subject to suitable progress, you should obtain your RYA Level 1, 2 or 3 certificate. The syllabus will include helming (steering) and crewing a dinghy on all points of sailing, rigging, launching and recovery, approaching jetties up and down wind, man overboard and capsizing. If conditions permit, we shall go to sea late in the course, which will enable the coastal endorsement to be awarded.
BEGINNERS SAILING RYA LEVEL 1 (Keelboat)
Pre Course Experience: None required
This two day course is for beginners who have done little or no sailing before. It is the first part of the RYA training scheme and its aim is to provide basic boat handling techniques and essential background knowledge. By the end of the course you will be able to sail safely under supervision.

BEGINNERS SAILING RYA LEVEL 2 (Keelboat)
Pre Course Experience: RYA Level 1
This is the second part of the RYA training scheme and is for those who have completed RYA level 1, or have equivalent experience. Its aim is to consolidate your basic knowledge of sailing and develop an awareness of safety. By the end of the course you will be capable of sailing a dinghy without an instructor on board in light winds. This course takes place over one weekend.

BEGINNERS SAILING RYA LEVEL 3 (Keelboat)
Pre Course Experience: RYA Level 2
This is the third part of the RYA training scheme and is for those who have completed RYA level 2, or have equivalent experience. Its aim is to enhance your skills and develop your techniques with a range of tasters from the advanced modules. After the course you will be more confident in sailing skills and techniques and ready to progress onto the advanced modules.

Materials & Equipment
What to bring each day:
Clothing: You will have plenty of time to change before going afloat. Please note the water can be very cold and the weather as always in the UK can be changeable. When packing your bag remember it is always easier to take a layer of clothing off.
- Soft sole shoes / Trainers to wear on the water (no welligtons) These are in addition to your dry footwear – barefoot is not an option
- Towel
- 2 Fleeces or sweat shirts
- 2 T shirts
- 2 pairs of trousers (not jeans)
- 1 Pair of shorts
- A suitable hat with string to attach to bouyancy aid
- Swimwear
- Suncream (SPF 15 or higher)
- Bottled water to take afloat
- Strong bag to take spare clothes afloat in safety craft
Food and drink:
Tea & Coffee will be supplied and available during the day Any other food you would like you will need to bring with you or purchase locally. Southwick has a microwave and a fridge you will be able to use. Food can be purchased from Southwick Square, a 10 minute walk.
