Corporate Sailing Day

SYC held its first ever corporate sailing day event on Friday, arranging a day out on the water for 20 guests from PCR. With two fully coded charter yachts with pro skippers (including ex SYC Youth Team member Jo Fry) the morning comprised sail training, with some short course racing in the afternoon after a splendid lunch delivered by Des and Andrea aboard RIB1 who were in attendance all day. Guests were then taken back to SYC for tea and cakes, club cocktails and a three course surf-n-turf meal from Chef Simon. Steward Jon and his bar team then kept our guests fully watered until closing. We have had some very positive comments so many thanks to all involved.

Round the Island

June 2015

A good fleet comprising eight boats from SYC took part in the Round the Island Race, but especial recognition must go to David Golding and Firebird who sailed one of our smallest and most traditional boats to a notable 95th position out of 700 boats in the ISC class. The photo is of Firebird sneaking past the Needles. Tim Cork with Ushaka also sailed his socks off with a praiseworthy 3rd place out of the 33 entries in IRC 3B and 10th out of 496 in IRC.

Well done to the rest of the SYC fleet which also included Maverick, Zonpuka, Arwen, Ruby, Plover and Flyover.

News from the Steward

July 2015 onwards

Jon Edon our Club Steward has announced that the club will from 1 July 2015 be serving light lunches on weekdays from 12:00 until 14:00. On offer will be filled Jacket Potatoes with Salad at £4, Ham and Cheese Ploughmans at £4 and Freshly Made Baguettes or Sandwiches with various fillings at £2.

Jon is also rather proud of his new cocktail list featuring some fabulous drinks of his own design. These have already been trialled and tested extensively on willing members, so don't be afraid of ordering something different!

Jon has also 'refurbed' the bar staff who will be sporting new uniforms from this Friday.

The bar opening times have also been revised and it will now be open according to the following schedule:

150 Years of RNLI Shoreham

RNLI anni logoA lifeboat station was established by the RNLI at Shoreham in 1865 on Kingston Beach at a cost of £133. There have been nine lifeboats at the station in the last 150 years and eight medals for gallantry have been awarded to crew members, five silver and three bronze. To mark this milestone, Shoreham lifeboat station is organising several events in 2015 and you can get news on these at their website www.shorehamlifeboat.co.uk

A French Perspective

Sylvie and Claude Lacroix of Club Nautique Valerais have posted a video of their recent Ascension rally from St.Valéry-en-Caux to the Solent and then to SYC for a warm welcome and ascension dinner. The video is of course in French but paints a lovely picture of their experiences. SYC has a close cross channel relationship with CNV and we look forward to enjoying their hospitality during our St.Valery Rally 28-31 August. The video can be seen below.

E-Cigarettes

From April 2015

Following questions from Members, the Board have discussed the use of E-Cigarettes and have decided that their use by members and guests inside the club house should be restricted to the carpeted areas of the bar only and not in the restaurant or any other part of the club.

Club Steward

We are very pleased to announce that The Commodore has formally offered Mr Jonathan Edon the position as Club Steward and that he has accepted this key position at SYC and will be starting with us on 28 April 2015.

Royal Escape Race 2017

Friday 26 May 2017

The race was a huge success and celebrations in Fécamp were made all the sweeter for SYC as Doug Beanlands collected the Tony and Adele Boysons Commemorative team trophy as SYC Team Captain. Other notable results for SYC include Barda taking 1st in IRC 2 with Maverick in 3rd. Truant took 3rd in SCCH 1 and was the first placed short-handed boat. Moon River was first in opted motor sailing.

Triangle Race 2016

The Triangle Race is one of the UK's premier double handed challenges and is run every two years. The Royal Torbay Yacht Club has now posted the Notice of Race for the 2016 event and as so many SYC boats have taken part in previous years we thought it appropriate to promote it on the SYC website. If you have yet to take part then this is one event that you really ought to consider. Ask around at the club and you'll hear nothing but good things. St.Georges Dinner

An evening of patriotic fun and entertainment and wholesome traditional fare with knights and damsels gathering at 19:30 for 20:00. To support the theme you are encouraged to wear red and white for what has in the past been one of the best fun evenings at SYC!  For just £18.00 per head.

We must also explain that our Admiral, Tony Boysons has made an incredibly generous offer to put wine on everybody's table, and he'll be there to make sure we drink it!

RYA Dinghy Show 2016

Sat 5 March

Dave Terry has organised a 17 seater minibus for a trip to the Dinghy Show at Alexandra Palace on Saturday 5 March. The bus will leave the Shoreham Clubhouse at around 09:30 hours and tickets are £15 per person (excluding entry to the event which can be paid for on the door). If you would like a seat(s) please contact Dave Terry.

Sailability AGM

Sat 11 February

The Annual General Meeting of Sussex Sailability will take place at Sussex Yacht Club, Shoreham, on Saturday 11 February 2017, with the meeting commencing at 15:00 in the restaurant.

Anyone who wishes to be considered for election as a Sailability Trustee or as a Committee Member should contact the SYC Club Secretary by noon on Friday 13 January.
